Shaolin Kempo

Why this Web Page on Shaolin Kempo?

This page is for the Beginner or Long Time Student, to explain to them, some truths that they will never know, unless it is told to them. Hopefully people who read this web site will learn from it.

This web site is not to “offend people”.

If you are offended, please don’t come back here.

It’s that simple…

The real , basic history on Shaolin Kempo.

Shaolin Kempo or Kempo or Kenpo or Shorinji ,or Shaolin Kempo Karate or even Kempo Karate.. is all the same thing.

It doesn’t matter what school came out first or whatever.

Some people credit one “Master” over another..well that is also is fine. It is always good to have role models and inspiration. There are a lot of people credited for “Kempo” here in the U.S.A., but “they” didn’t “make” the art… The basic and very quick, history, is Kempo is made up of Shaolin Kung Fu techniques…some from the 5 animal form,(Dragon,Tiger,Snake,Crane,Leopard) and other techniques from different Chinese Styles.

And basic Japanese Karate…. That’s it.

If you really want to “label” the real Masters of the Art, Bohidrama / Ta-Mo and the Shaolin Monks, from long ago in China, and the forefathers of Japanese Karate…

….Chojin Myagiect..againThat’s it.

Money, Training and Attitude?

Here are some things to really think about, if you are a beginner or long time student in “Kempo

1)     The main thing about and of the schools.. whether they are big or local chains, is $$$money$$$. Sadly, I would put 80% of the schools in the U.S.A, in this bracket. Too much is thought about how much money the school is making instead of teaching basic self-defense and the well-being of the students. I know that’s hard to take, but it is 100% true…

2)     Realistic training is also something that should be tested, by the student. Are the strikes and kicks that the instructor is teaching, always slow? Would the knife and club disarming techniques being taught by the instructors, leave you open for attack in a “real” situation? If some attacked you with “boxer like” jabs… could you use foot work and head covers and counter techniques instead of just using forearm blocks, that are too slow for defense? How about grappling techniques? Defense against a grappler? Can you recover from some who does a “Takedown” on you or a hold? Are you, as a student, being taught any “ground fighting”? The majority of students, if they truthfully put this test, to there training, will find that their schools are not teaching as well as they should!

3)     Attitude of the Instructors and Students. I’ve seen more and more really poor examples of anger issues of both Instructors and Students. The basic philosophy of ANY Martial Art is to be humble, and not to “look”, to get into fights. As one old quote says:”The Tiger will always look for the fastest way to resolve a conflict, the Dragon will always find, another way…”  Too many Tigers in the current Kempo schools and not enough Dragons…

Some final thoughts, and who I am…

I made this page for beginning and current students to really keep an open mind about what is being shown to them. My recommendations are to research on the Web and by reading, and taking other Martial Arts to augment there training. Remember that being Bias against other styles is really stupid. There is much that can be learned.

Even though I “broke away” from a major Shaolin Kempo school, I continue to practice. I’ve been practicing

(and learning) for about 20 years, I also have learned Yang Tai Chi Chuan and I also I am enjoying learning Aikido.
